How to Replace Adobe Illustrator with VectorCraft: A Practical Guide

Adobe Illustrator is powerful, but it has grown heavy over the years. Complex illustrations with thousands of anchor points often cause zoom lag, and basic path operations sometimes fail with vague errors like "Cannot perform operation". At the same time, a single Illustrator license costs over $260 every year.

VectorCraft is a free, open-source vector drawing app written in pure Rust (github.com/storytold/vectorcraft). It was built by developer Brandon Thomas and contributors to provide a fast, familiar drawing experience that runs at 120 frames per second on everyday hardware.

Here is how you can use VectorCraft to replace Illustrator in your daily design routine.

1. Why Try VectorCraft?

FeatureAdobe IllustratorVectorCraft

Speed with 20k shapesNoticeable stutter when zooming27 ms redraw (smooth 120 fps)
Path booleansCan fail on tight curvesExact arithmetic solver (never fails)
Affinity filesCannot open themOpens .afdesign and .afphoto natively

2. Step 1: Install VectorCraft

VectorCraft is lightweight and does not install background updaters.

Windows (10 and 11)

  1. Head over to the Download center.
  2. Pick the 64-bit MSI installer or the Portable ZIP.
  3. With the portable version, simply extract the ZIP file and run vectorcraft.exe. You can keep it on a USB drive and use it on any PC without administrative privileges.
  4. SmartScreen prompt: If Windows displays a blue prompt, click More info → Run anyway. The software is open source and verifiable on GitHub.

macOS

  • Download the universal .dmg installer and drag VectorCraft to /Applications. It supports both Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) and Intel Macs with hardware graphics acceleration.

Linux

  • Download the .AppImage, mark it executable (chmod +x), and run it directly on Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, or Debian.

3. Step 2: The Pen Tool and Shape Booleans

You do not need to relearn vector drawing. VectorCraft uses the standard pen and path tools you already know:

1. The Pen and Direct Selection Tools

  • Pen (P): Click to place sharp corner points, or click and drag to pull out smooth bezier handles. Hold Alt/Option to break or adjust individual handles.
  • Direct Selection (A): Click anchor points to nudge them with arrow keys or adjust curve curves.

2. Booleans That Do Not Fail

In Illustrator, joining or cutting complex paths with tiny overlaps can fail. VectorCraft uses exact curve arithmetic:

  • Unite / Add: Merge overlapping shapes into one single path.
  • Subtract: Cut the top shape out of the bottom shape cleanly.
  • Intersect: Keep only the overlapping region.
  • Unlimited Undo: Thanks to Rust's memory architecture, you can hit Ctrl/Cmd + Z as many times as you need without slowing down the app.

4. Step 3: Opening Existing Illustrator and Affinity Files

If you have years of old design files, you do not have to leave them behind:

  1. Affinity Designer Files (.afdesign, .afphoto, .afpub): Following Canva's purchase of Affinity, many designers want to keep their files accessible. VectorCraft can open and place files from Affinity versions 1, 2, and 3 directly.
  2. Adobe Illustrator Files (.ai): VectorCraft opens PDF-compatible .ai files, preserving layers, paths, and fills.
  3. Standard Formats: Export your work as clean SVGs for websites, high-res PNGs for presentations, or print-ready PDF/X files for print shops.

5. Step 4: Automating Vector Drawing with Claude (MCP)

VectorCraft has a built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This allows AI assistants like Claude Code to draw and export shapes through plain English commands.

Add VectorCraft to Claude Code:

Run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add vectorcraft -- /path/to/vectorcraft-cli mcp

Examples of what you can ask:

  • "Draw a modern weather icon set (sun, cloud, rain) and save them as SVGs."
  • "Open logo.vectorcraft, change the main color to deep blue (#1e3a8a), and export a 2x PNG."
  • "Check all text layers in this poster file and convert them to outlines."

7. Summary

VectorCraft gives you a clean, fast vector drawing environment without subscription fees or account logins. It opens your existing files, runs at 120 fps, and lets you automate drawings with modern AI tools.
